How to compress Image to 20 KB
- Add your photo (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC converted to JPG first). The target is already set to 20 KB.
- The tool lowers JPEG quality step by step and, only if needed, the pixel size — keeping the sharpest version that fits.
- Download the file. If the form also asks for exact dimensions (for example 200 × 230 px), crop or resize first with the Image Resizer, then compress here.
What does this tool do?
20 KB is a common ceiling for candidate photos on recruitment and exam portals — for example many Indian recruitment forms ask for a 20–50 KB photo and a 10–20 KB signature. At that size a well-compressed JPEG of a face around 200 × 230 pixels still looks clean, but a full-resolution phone photo (3–5 MB) has to lose most of its pixels.
That's why the order matters: crop tightly to your head and shoulders first, so the pixels you keep are the ones that matter. Then let the compressor find the highest quality that fits under 20 KB. Your photos are processed in your browser and never uploaded.
Why use it?
- Target is preset to 20 KB.
- Keeps the most detail that fits.
- Batch several photos and download a ZIP.
- Nothing is uploaded.
What fits in 20 KB
Typical results for a passport-style head-and-shoulders photo saved as JPEG:
| Pixel size | Typical size at good quality | Fits 20 KB? |
|---|---|---|
| 150 × 200 px | 8–14 KB | Yes, easily |
| 200 × 230 px | 12–20 KB | Yes |
| 300 × 400 px | 22–40 KB | Only at low quality |
| 600 × 800 px | 60–120 KB | No — reduce pixels first |

Your files are processed entirely in your browser using built-in web technologies. They are not uploaded to our servers, and closing the page clears them from memory. There's no account to create and nothing to install.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my photo look blurry at 20 KB?
The image probably still has too many pixels, so the compressor had to lower quality a lot. Crop to your head and shoulders and resize to the dimensions the form asks for (often 200 × 230 px), then compress — you'll get a much sharper result.
Should I use JPG or PNG for a 20 KB photo?
JPG. Photos compress far better as JPEG; a PNG photo of the same size would be several times larger. Use PNG only for graphics with flat colours.
The form says 10–20 KB. What should I aim for?
Aim for 15–19 KB. Some portals reject files that are exactly on the limit or measure kilobytes as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024, so a small margin avoids rejection.
Can I compress a scanned document to 20 KB?
Yes for a single page with mostly text — save it as a grayscale JPEG around 800 px wide. Multi-page or colour documents usually need more than 20 KB; use the PDF tools for those.
