Gravitational force
687.398 N
Mass 1 (m₁)
5.972 × 10^24 kg
Mass 2 (m₂)
70 kg
Distance between centres (r)
6,371,000 m
How it was calculated
  1. F = G × m₁ × m₂ ÷ r²
  2. G = 6.6743 × 10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg²
  3. F = 687.39814 N
Defaults: Earth's mass, a 70 kg person, and Earth's radius — the result is that person's weight.

How to use the Gravitational Force Calculator

  1. Pick what to solve for.
  2. Enter the masses in kg and the distance between their centres in metres.
  3. Read the force in newtons.

What does this tool do?

Every mass attracts every other mass. The force is proportional to both masses and falls with the square of the distance: double the distance and the force drops to a quarter.

The defaults — Earth's mass, a 70 kg person and Earth's radius — give about 687 N, which is that person's weight. Use scientific notation like 5.972e24 for large numbers.

Why use it?

  • Solve for force, mass or distance.
  • Accepts scientific notation.
  • Uses the CODATA value of G.

The formula

F = G m₁ m₂ ÷ r²
G = 6.6743 × 10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg²
