How to use the Equation Solver
- Choose “Equation in x” or “System of linear equations”.
- Type your equation(s), for example 2x + 5 = 17 or x^3 = 2x + 1.
- Read the solutions and the check table that plugs them back in.
What does this tool do?
For a single equation, the solver scans a range of x values for every place the two sides are equal and refines each one to high precision. That means it works for polynomials of any degree and for equations with functions like sin, cos, ln and sqrt — not just straight lines.
For simultaneous equations, it reads the coefficients of each unknown and solves the system exactly with Gaussian elimination. It tells you when equations contradict each other or don't pin down a single answer.
Why use it?
- Works for non-linear equations, not just linear ones.
- Solves 2 to 6 simultaneous equations.
- Shows a check so you can trust each answer.
Examples
x^3 − 6x^2 + 11x = 6 has solutions x = 1, 2 and 3.
The system 2x + 3y = 13 and x − y = −1 gives x = 2, y = 3.
Accuracy and limits
- Single equations are solved numerically within the search range you set (−100 to 100 by default). Widen the range if you expect larger solutions.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type powers and multiplication?
Use ^ for powers (x^2) and either * or nothing for multiplication (2x, 3(x+1), x*y).
Why does it say “no real solution”?
Either the equation has only complex solutions (like x² = −1) or the solutions lie outside your search range.
