How to use the Data Size Converter
- Type the file or storage size you want to convert.
- Choose the unit you're converting from and the unit you want.
- Read the result instantly. Use the swap button to convert the other way.
- Check the tables below for every unit and common values.
What does this tool do?
There are two ways to count data. Storage makers and most networks use decimal units, where 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Many operating systems count in binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) but still label them “GB”.
That's why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: it's the same number of bytes, counted in binary units.
Why use it?
- Understand file sizes and upload limits.
- Explain the “missing” space on new drives.
- Convert network speeds (bits) to file sizes (bytes).
Decimal vs binary
How the same sizes compare:
| Decimal | Bytes | Binary equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 KB | 1,000 | 0.977 KiB |
| 1 MB | 1,000,000 | 0.954 MiB |
| 1 GB | 1,000,000,000 | 0.931 GiB |
| 1 TB | 10¹² | 0.909 TiB |

Frequently asked questions
How long does a 1 GB download take at 100 Mbps?
Internet speeds are in bits. 100 megabits per second is 12.5 megabytes per second, so 1 GB (1,000 MB) takes about 80 seconds, before overheads.
