How to Sign a PDF Without Printing It

Sign a PDF in a minute on a computer or phone: draw, type or upload your signature, add the date and download — plus when an electronic signature is legally enough.

Quick answer

Open the PDF in a signing tool, draw your signature with a mouse or finger, type it, or upload a photo of it, click where it should go, add the date, and download the signed file. There's no need to print and scan — and with a browser-based tool the document never leaves your computer.

Printing a contract, signing it with a pen and scanning it back takes ten minutes and produces a blurry, crooked file. Signing the PDF directly takes one minute and looks better. Here's how to do it on any device, what kind of signature you're actually creating, and when you need something more formal.

Sign a PDF in four steps

  1. 1
Open your PDF in the signing tool. If it's an iPhone or Android download, it's usually in Files or Downloads.
  2. 2
Create your signature: draw it (a finger on a phone works best), type your name in a handwriting font, or upload a photo of your signature on white paper — the background is removed automatically.
  3. 3
Place it: click the signature line on the right page, then drag and resize it so it sits naturally on the line.
  4. 4
Add the date and your printed name if the form asks for them, then download the signed PDF.
Try the free Sign PDFDraw, type or upload your signature and place it on any page — nothing is uploaded.

In the US (ESIGN Act), the EU (eIDAS) and the UK, an electronic signature is legally valid for most everyday agreements. A few document types — some property deeds, wills and court filings — need wet ink, witnesses or a qualified digital signature. If in doubt, ask the person who sent you the document what they accept.

Filling in the form before you sign

If the PDF has fillable boxes, complete them first with PDF Form Filler so your answers stay editable. If it's a flat scan with no boxes, use Add Text to PDF to type on top of it, then sign.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sign a PDF on my phone?

Open the PDF in a browser-based signing tool, draw your signature with your finger, tap where it should go and download the signed file. It works the same on iPhone and Android.

Is a signature image legally binding?

For most everyday agreements, yes — electronic signatures are recognised under the US ESIGN Act, the EU's eIDAS regulation and UK law. Some documents, such as deeds and wills, have stricter rules.

Can I sign a PDF without Adobe?

Yes. A browser-based tool can add your signature, date and initials without installing Adobe Acrobat or creating an account.
