Speaking Speed Trainer

Follow a pacer at your target speed, then measure your own.

About the Speaking Speed Trainer

Speaking pace changes how listeners feel. Too fast and you lose them; too slow and they drift. This trainer has two parts. The pacer highlights each word of a short passage at the speed you choose, from 90 to 200 words per minute, so you can feel what a given pace is like.

Then you time yourself. Press Start, read aloud at your natural speed, press Stop, and the app calculates your words per minute and speaking duration from the real elapsed time. A pace band tells you whether that suits conversation, presentation or fast reading.

Pace is not only about speed. Native speakers vary their rate, slowing down for important words and speeding through familiar phrases. Use the pacer to feel a steady rhythm, then practice adding pauses at commas and full stops. A calm 130 WPM with good pauses sounds more confident than a rushed 180.

How to use it

  1. 1Pick a level and a target pace, then choose a sentence set.
  2. 2Press Follow the pacer and read along as each word lights up.
  3. 3Switch to Test mode: press Start, read aloud, press Stop when done.
  4. 4Review your WPM, duration and pace band, and track progress over time.

Practice tips

  • Most natural conversation sits around 120–160 WPM.
  • For presentations, aim for 110–140 and use pauses.
  • Trying to speed up? Increase the target by 10 WPM at a time.
  • If your pace is high, add pauses between phrases instead of slowing every word.

What it measures, and what it doesn’t

WPM = number of words in the text ÷ the time between your Start and Stop, in minutes. It measures how long you took, not how clearly you spoke.

Speaking Speed Trainer FAQ

What is a good speaking speed in English?

Around 120 to 160 words per minute for conversation. Slower, around 100 to 130, is often best for formal talks or when speaking to learners.

Does it listen to me?

No. It times you using the Start and Stop buttons. This avoids microphone permissions and keeps the number honest.

Can I use my own text?

Yes. Paste any text in the custom box and the pacer and test will use it.
