About the Minimal Pair Trainer
A minimal pair is two words that differ by one sound, like ship and sheep. If you can't hear the difference you usually can't say it either, so this trainer starts with your ears: a word is spoken, you choose which of the two you heard.
There are 21 contrasts, from vowel length (ɪ vs iː) to R and L, TH and S, V and B, and more, each with a short tip. Your accuracy is tracked per contrast so you can see which ones need more practice. After each answer you see the real IPA of both words.
Research on second-language listening shows that training with minimal pairs can improve both perception and production, especially when you also say the words aloud. That is why each answer shows the IPA and a physical tip, and why the Say it mode exists. Aim for ten questions on one contrast, then switch rather than mixing everything at once.
How to use it
- 1Pick a contrast, or choose All to mix them.
- 2Press Hear and choose the word you think was spoken.
- 3Read the IPA and tip after every answer.
- 4Switch to Say it mode to practice both words aloud.
Practice tips
- Close your eyes while listening so spelling doesn't bias you.
- Listen at slow speed first, then at normal speed.
- If you keep missing one contrast, stay on it for a whole session.
- After a correct answer, say both words aloud to link ear and mouth.
What it measures, and what it doesn’t
Accuracy is the share of listening questions you answered correctly, saved per contrast on this device. The audio is your browser's built-in voice, so a few pairs may sound similar on some devices.
What your browser needs: Nothing extra: the listening exercise uses the recorded voices.

Minimal Pair Trainer FAQ
Why do some pairs sound alike on my device?
Built-in voices vary. If a pair is unclear, switch the accent or the speed, or try another device. The IPA shown after each answer is always accurate dictionary data.
What if my browser can't speak?
You'll see a notice and can still study the pairs, IPA and tips. The listening quiz plays recorded audio, so it needs your browser to play sound.
Do I need a microphone?
No. Listening mode needs only audio output. Say it mode lets you record yourself, but it is optional.
