About Sound Explorers

Sound Explorers is a game about listening, and every sound in it is made live in the browser, so nothing needs downloading. In Echo Hall, four creatures sing a short song and light up as they sing; children copy it, and the songs grow from two notes to five. The Instrument Gallery plays a mystery sound — drum, bell, flute, xylophone, harp or shaker — and children pick the instrument. High & Low Tower plays two notes for children to compare, then short tunes that climb or fall. Rhythm Stones plays a drum pattern and children choose the matching row of stones: a big stone for a long beat, two small stones for two quick sounds. Background music stays off during the rounds so nothing gets in the way of listening. Every task has a picture version too, so children who are deaf or hard of hearing, or playing with the sound off, can still take part. The Sound Studio has a drip piano and an eight-step creature band for making music freely.

What children learn

  • Listen carefully and hold a short sequence of sounds in memory
  • Recognise common instruments by their sound
  • Tell higher sounds from lower ones and hear a melody rise or fall
  • Match a heard rhythm to simple picture notation (long and short sounds)
  • Create and change a short musical pattern

Tips for parents

  • Headphones help in a busy room, at a low volume.
  • Play clap-back at home: you clap a rhythm, your child claps it back, then swap.
  • Sing a note high like a mouse and low like a bear and ask which is which.
  • Let the Sound Studio be a free-play reward after the listening rounds.
  • Sound starts only after your child presses a button — never when the page opens.

Tips for teachers

  • Supports early-years music goals around listening, pitch (high and low) and steady beat.
  • Rhythm Stones uses simple “ta” and “ti-ti” style notation — name the stones with your class's own rhythm words.
  • Echo Hall works as a whole-class listening warm-up on a whiteboard.
  • The picture mode makes the game usable with pupils who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Sound Explorers FAQ

Can my child play with the sound off?

Yes. When sound is muted the game switches on pictures: creatures light up, notes show as bars of different heights, rhythms flash, and each instrument shows its sound word (BOOM, DING, TOOT). Some tasks are easier with sound, but none need it.

Are there any sudden loud sounds?

No. Every sound goes through a gentle limiter, nothing plays until your child taps, and there's a volume slider and mute button on every screen (or press M).

What age is Sound Explorers for?

Ages 4 to 8. Echo Hall and the Instrument Gallery suit younger children; pitch comparisons and rhythms suit five- to eight-year-olds.

Does it record my child?

No. The game never uses the microphone. The Sound Studio only plays sounds, and songs aren't saved or sent anywhere.

Is it free and safe?

Yes. No sign-up, no chat and no personal information; stars are kept only in your browser.
